Hi 3rd Grade Families!

Here are some things to note for next week.

Pencils

Many of the students need pencils for class.  If you could send some in as soon as possible, that would be wonderful.  Please keep in mind that Ticonderoga pencils sharpen the best.

Lutheran Schools Week (3/18-3/22)

We have a lot of exciting and special things planned for Lutheran Schools Week.  Your child should have brought home a detailed note.  Here are some of the highlights.

  • Sunday 3/17:  The students will be singing and playing recorders during St. John's church service (10                               a.m.).
    • Please have your child in the church basement by 9:40 a.m.
      • Mrs. Conoyer will bring all of the recorders that were in school today.
        • If your child did not bring his/her recorder to school today, please be sure he/she brings it on Sunday.
  • Monday 3/18:  We will be walking to the Fire Department and Police Department and having a picnic lunch in Central Park (weather permitting).
  • Tuesday 3/19:  We will be going to Gem City Gymnastics in Quincy from 12:30-2:30.  If you can help by driving, please let me know.  If you can, please also let me know how many students you will be able to take in your vehicle, with seat-belts.
  • Wednesday 3/20:  We will be visiting Luther Manor.  Please let me know if you can help by driving to this event as well (and how many students you can take).  We will need to leave here by 9:00 a.m.

Baskets for Basket Bingo

St. John's is hosting an event called Basket Bingo on Saturday, March 23.  Our class has been asked to help fill a basket for this event.  We will be filling an outdoor/camping/fishing basket.  We are asking for donations of these types of items to help fill the basket.  Some examples of the items we would be looking for are fishing poles, tackle, or nets; lanterns, flashlights, marshmallow/hot dog roasting sticks (other camping gadgets), or games.  If you have other ideas that would work, that would be great too!!!  Also, if you would rather not donate an item, you could make a monetary donation (such as a $5 donation), and we could use that to purchase items too.  Please send the item or cash donation in by this coming Monday, March 18th. Thank you for your help. :)

Religion
We will be continuing Unit 4, "Jesus Brings Salvation".

Memory

We will be reciting memory verses on Tuesday and Thursday next week. The assignments are as follows:

Tuesday 3/19 – Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.  Mark 16:16

Thursday 3/21 –  One Lord, one faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Due to Lutheran Schools Week, we will not be reading a story from the reading book this week.  There will not be a test on Friday.

I am sending home a paper that has two parts to it, Part A Reading Strategy:  Summarize and Part B Independent Reading Log again today.  Please look for these to come home every Friday for the rest of the year.  Part A will be for extra credit.  Part B is a required assignment.  Please follow the directions given for each part.  Part B (the required portion) asks the students to choose something they would like to read and complete the log.  The students can choose to read a picture or a chapter book and fill in the log when they are finished reading the whole book.  If your child needs extra space to write, please use a sheet of lined paper and staple it to the back.  These papers will be due every Friday, so the paper being sent home today is due on Friday, 3/22

A book report has been assigned for the 4th quarter.  Information about this was sent home this week.  It is due on Wednesday, May 15.

Grammar and Writing

We will not have a grammar quiz on Friday.

Spelling

We will not be having spelling tests this week.

Math

We will continue working on Section 9 next week.

We will continue taking timed tests for addition and subtraction facts. Please help your child prepare for this by reviewing the flashcards that I am sending home every day. This should only take about 3-5 minutes each day. The students will take a series of timed tests every Monday and Wednesday to track their progress. Once they have mastered a level (scored a 90% or better) they will be able to move on to the next level. For example, if they scored a 90% or better on their basic addition facts adding 1, they will move on to basic addition facts adding 2. Again, please help your child by going over these facts every day. If you have any questions, please ask.  Once the students complete the timed test for addition facts (through adding 12), they will move on to subtraction facts, starting with -0.

We will take timed tests on Monday and Wednesday next week.

  • Wednesday 3/20:  We will be visiting Luther Manor.  Please let me know if you can help by driving to this event as well (and how many students you can take).  We will need to leave here by 9:00 a.m.

Thank you for your help. :)

Math

We have started Section 7.  We will be studying congruent shapes, triangles, and multiplication facts.  Please look for a test to be coming.

We have started taking timed tests for addition facts.

Music

Please remind your child to have his/her recorder at school on music days. Thanks!

Assignments

We will be using a new assignment policy beginning this quarter, to help prepare for 4th grade.  This policy is as follows:

  • All assignments have been due the day after they are assigned.  (Assignments given on Friday are due on Monday).
    • Beginning with assignments given during the 3rd quarter (and for the rest of the school year), any assignment that is not turned in the next day will have 2 points taken off.
      • The student will have one more day to turn the assignment in. (For example:  If it was due on Tuesday, it needs to be turned in on Wednesday).
        • If the assignment is still not turned in after that extra day, the student will receive a 50% (F) on that assignment.

Also, during previous quarters, I had given assignments back that had grades lower than a C- for corrections.  For the first quarter, I gave full credit back for corrections.  During the second quarter, I gave half credit for corrections.  For the rest of the year, I will no longer be handing back papers for corrections.  The grade the students receive once the assignment is turned in is the grade that they will receive.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

November 27, 2018 - Revised Week

Dear Third Grade Families,

I pray that you all had a blessed Thanksgiving break and enjoyed the extra couple of days. :)

Due to the unexpected short week, I have decided to make some changes to what I had originally planned for this week. These changes are as follows:

Memory:        I will ask the students to recite the assignment given for today (11/27) tomorrow. This assignment was

Acts 4:12. I will ask the students to recite the assignment that was planned for Thursday on Friday. This

assignment will be 1 Timothy 2:5-6.

Language Arts:        We will do what I had planned for Language Arts next week instead of this week. This means that

we will not have a spelling test this week. This also means that we will not have a reading test or

a grammar quiz on Friday this week. Please plan on the students taking the test on the spelling

words that should have been for this week next week, and we will work with the article Messaging

Mania and the grammar concepts of past-tense verbs and commas in a series next week as well.

Thank you for your help.

Have a wonderful evening.

In Christ,

Mrs. Salo

If you haven’t yet, please send me a quick email so I can have you in my contacts list.

Please keep in mind that while email is a good way to contact me, the best time for me to check it is while I am at school (8 a.m. – noon). You could also always send a note with your child or call me through the school. There is a space in each student’s planner for writing notes each day.

Please be sure to sign your child’s planner each night. That is a great way for us to communicate about your child’s work.

Here are some things that will be happening next week.

Revision for Newsletter 9-7-18

The Memory verse for Tuesday 9/11 is "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!", but the Scripture reference is actually Luke 11:28.  I apologize for the mistake.

Hi Everyone!

If you haven’t yet, please send me a quick email. I would like to have all of your email addresses in my contacts, in case I need to send a group message.

Please keep in mind that while email is a good way to contact me, the best time for me to check it is while I am at school (8 a.m. – noon). I have limited internet access at home which makes it not as easy to check it from there. You could also always send a note with your child or call me through the school. There is a space in each student’s planner for writing notes each day. If you would like to use that space, I would be sure to see it when I check your child’s planner (and it shouldn’t get lost that way). J If you choose to call and I am teaching when you call, please leave a message and I will get back with you as soon as I can.

Here are some things that will be happening next week.

Religion

We will be continuing to study the unit “God and His Word”.

Memory

The students will have separate grades listed on their report cards for memory and religion.

The memory assignments for next week are as follows:

  • (I misread the schedule last week, and we did what was originally scheduled for 9/11 on 9/6.  So, we’re doing the assignment for 9/6 on 9/11).

Thursday 9/13 -    "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your

mind and with all your strength. … You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. Mark 12:30-31

I will remind them to bring their Memory Folders home so that you have the assignments in written form for studying.
