Dear parents, 

I can't believe that this is the final week of school this calendar year.  The time has flown by so quickly. This newsletter will be for the week of December 16 - 20 and the spelling words for the week that we return back to school on January 6, 2020.

Religion: Continue Israel Crosses the Jordan and Gid Gives Israel it's First King.

Spelling: Monday begins with SPARKLE then spelling pre - test, rest of the week will be studies on inflectional endings and changing y to i.

English: Types of pronouns.

Reading: Scholastic News.

Math: Times testing Monday through Thursday.

Afternoons 1-2:30 will consist of going to the church to practice for the Christmas program. Please send a warm coat, hats and gloves for the walk to the church.

Christmas party: On Friday, we will take our final spelling test.  We will leave for Luther Manor at 9:00 and leave to return to school at approximately 10:00.  Upon our arrival, we will begin our party with a Christmas movie in our classroom. Boys and girls may bring a wrapped book ($5 limit) to trade with another student for a gift exchange. We will use a number drawing to determine who gets which book that coordinates with their number. If you would like to send treats to share with everyone, that would be great.

Dismissal will be at 12:30 after lunch.

Dear parents,

We have had a great week.  Only two more to go until Christmas Break. Below is what we have planned for next week:

 

Spelling:  Monday will consist of SPARKLE and the spelling pre-test.  Inflectional endings will be the concentration of the week.  On Friday we will take the final spelling test.

English:  The focus in English this week will be pronouns, antecedents, and pronoun capitalization and clarity.

Religion: Continue Snake on the Pole and Our Daily Bread Fourth Petition.

Reading: The Life and Times of the Ant. The weekly assessment will be given on Friday.

Math: Relating multiplication and division, multiplying two digit numbers, word problems equal groups, and percents.  Times tests will be given on Tuesday and Friday. Please continue practice multiplication facts through twelve times twelve.

Social Studies: Study guide goes home on Monday. Test on Thursday.

Science: Sum it Up and Brain Check.

Dear parents,

 

We have had a great week in fourth grade.  We studied about and did a science experiment on celery tubes.  We used variations such as stalks with and without leaves and different colors of water.  We observed them daily and had great classroom conversations about the similarities and differences between each stalk of celery.

I will be gone next Thursday and Friday.  Gayle Thompson will be the substitute for those days.

Here is the agenda for next week:

 

Spelling: SPARKLE and pre-test on Monday. Compound words will be the focus of the week.  Friday will be the final test for the week.

English: Lessons will be about irregular verbs.

Religion: Snake on the Pole lessons.

Reading: Amazing Ants, A Life at Work,  and Charles Micacci. Weekly assessment on Friday.

Math: Study guide on Monday and test on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday's lesson will be about parenthesis, Associative Property, lines and segments, and relating multiplication and division. Times test on Tuesday.

Science: Plant reproduction, flowers and cones, and seeds and cones.

Social Studies: Further studies on the early history of the northeast.

Dear Parents,

Another week has come and gone.  It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here. 

Congratulations to Hauns Nunemacher for having the egg covered in bubble wrap that survived the drop from the third floor to the second floor in the hallway of our school.  Other eggs were covered in small blankets and newspapers but were not as lucky as the bubble wrapped egg.

This newsletter will cover next week as well as the two day week of Thanksgiving.

Religion: Test on Monday over unit 2.  The rest of the week and week after will cover Israel's Long Journey and  Our Promised Land.

English:  Linking verbs and irregular verbs.

Spelling:  SPARKLE and pre-test on Monday. Plurals and compound words will be this and next week's focus.

Reading: Book report rubrics for Because of Winn Dixie as well as a paper bag will go home today for book report presentation on Tuesday of next week. We will read The Frog Prince and discuss vocabulary, theme and read our Scholastic magazine.

Science: Discuss plant structures, leaves and vocabulary.

Social Studies: Growth of the North East and reading a time line.

Math:  Capacity, tenths and hundredths, relating decimals and fractions, multiplying 2 digit numbers, parentheses and the Associative Property and naming line and segments.

Timed tests will be given on Friday and the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.

Dear Parents,

I can't believe that another week has come and gone and mid - quarter ends today.

The book fair was a great success.  The students had a fun time dressing up each day this week. Here is the agenda for next week.

 

Spelling: SPARKLE and pre-test on Monday. Work will concentrate on soft c and g.

English: Main and helping verbs are the focus.

Reading: Because of Winn Dixie test on Wednesday.  Book report rubrics on Because of Winn Dixie will be given to students. Weekly assessment on Friday.

Religion: God's Promise to the Israelite's and the Ten Commandments. Study guide for unit 2 test to be given.

Math: Multiplication facts, reading an inch scale to the nearest fourth of an inch, capacity, tenths and hundredths, and relating decimals and fractions.  Please continue to help your child study their multiplication facts.

Science: The study will concentrate on how we can we improve a design.

Social Studies: Begin chapter four, Geography of the Northeast.

Happy Thursday!

We thank you for attending the parent-teacher conferences this week. It was a pleasure meeting with each of you and discussing many positive things about your student.  We are off to a great second quarter.

We will have our class party on Thursday, October 31 at 1:30-2:30.  As we discussed at the conferences, we will have our "party" with the third grade and play Bingo then go to recess. We have 21 students in all if you would like to send non-scary treats.

Dear parents,

It's Friday.  Parent-Teacher conference notices are going home with your child today.  Please fill out your preference times and return

on Monday, October 14. Below is next week's plan.

Spelling: SPARKLE and pre-test on Monday.  Spelling will consist of r-controlled vowels.

English: Possessive nouns.

Religion: Joseph and his brothers, Job and Moses. Students received new memory verses.

Reading: Cause and effect, context clues, and metaphors and hyperbole.  Weekly assessment on Friday.

Math: Multiplication facts 0's, 1's, 2's, and 5's,  and subtracting 3 digit numbers with regrouping. They will receive a study guide on October 21.  They will begin multiplication time tests the week of October 21.  Please help your child study their multiplication facts.

Science: Unit 1 test on Monday.  Study guides are being sent home today.  We will begin the engineering process this week.

Social Studies: Begin chapter 3 in which we will discuss U.S. regions, neighboring countries, understanding regions, and learn how to read a land use and resources map.

Next week's agenda:

English- Common and proper nouns.

Religion- Sodom and Gomorrah and the offering of Isaac.  We will finish up unit 1.  Study guides will be given out on Friday.  We will review on Monday and test is on Tuesday.

Reading- We will continue Because of Winn Dixie and we will discuss authors purpose. Friday students will have their weekly assessment.

Math- Rounding and units of length and perimeter will be the focus next week.  Study guides will be given on Tuesday and the test will be on Thursday.  Please continue to practice multiplication tables with your child.  We will begin timed tests soon.

Science- Read about communicating data and bar graphs. 

Social Studies- We will discuss U.S. government.

Dear parents,

We made it through another week. We are half way through the first quarter.  This year is already flying by.  Students will receive their mid quarter grades on Friday, September 20.  If your child wishes to order books from the Scholastic book order, they have been given our classroom code to use when ordering.

Next week's agenda is as follows:

Spelling- SPARKLE and pre-test on Monday.  Words this week will concentrate on the long O.

English- Run-on sentences and how to correct them will be the focus in English this week.

Reading- Continue reading Because of Winn Dixie. Sequencing, connotation/denotation, and prefixes.  Weekly assessment on Friday.

Math- Math test on Monday.  Students were given a study guide we filled in during class to study for the test. Next week's studies will be in expanded form, missing numbers in subtraction, adding columns with regrouping, temperature and elapsed time. Please aide your child in reviewing multiplication facts.  Timed tests will begin soon.

Religion- Abram finds a way through conflict, Abraham's prayer, questions about prayer, and Sodom and Gomorrah.  Please continue to encourage students to study their memory verses to recite on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Science- Sum It Up, Brain Check, and Show Me the Evidence.

Social Studies- Studies will revolve around the American landscape and climate in the U.S.

It's Friday! We have had a great and busy week.  Our class is hard working and a pleasure to have.  Thanks to all who turned in their cookie dough money.  Book orders were handed out to those who were interested.  If you wish to order, please turn them back into me with the money and order form before Friday afternoon.

Agenda for next week:

Spelling - SPARKLE before the pre-test, then the pre-test.  Spelling words will contain the long i sound.

English - Complex sentences and how to punctuate them.

Reading - Continue our reading of Because of WInn Dixie. We will answer questions for chapters 1-5.  Weekly assessment will be on Friday.

Math - Adding 3 digit numbers, subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers, and subtracting 2 digit numbers with regrouping.

Religion - Praising God's Name, God's Promise to Abraham, and Abram and Lot.

Science - Discussions will be about microscopes and time and temperature.

Social Studies - Map skills quiz on Wednesday and world map quiz on Thursday.

Dear parents,

Happy Thursday!  Please remember to send the paperwork from Meet the Teacher Night concerning your child so I can have it on file.  Cookie dough orders must be turned in by Tuesday, September 3.  Thank you so much for participating in the fundraiser to help our wonderful school.

Starting on Tuesday, we will begin our special classes.  Therefore, we will not have as much time to complete work in class.  Please remind your student to use their time wisely.  They are a great group of students.

Next week's agenda:

Religion - Tower of Babel.  Memory work for Tuesday is lesson 5 and for Thursday is lesson 6.

Spelling - Pre-test on Tuesday and final test on Friday.  Words will be those with long e.

English - Simple and compound sentences.

Reading - Venn diagrams, antonyms and library skills.  We will begin Because of Winn Dixie.  Weekly assessment will be on Friday.

Math - Students will be given a study guide and have a test on Wednesday.  We will fill in the study guide in class.  On Thursday and Friday, we will discuss adding word problems with missing addends and missing numbers in subtraction.

Science - Lesson 3, How Do Scientists Use Tools?

Dear Parents,

We have completed our first full week of school and what a success it was.  Please look at your child's planner each night and sign it so I am aware that you have viewed it.  Please make sure that all of the paperwork about your child and permission slips are returned to me.  I hope the cookie dough sales for our school fundraiser are going well. I want to thank you for all of your help and dedication.  You are awesome parents.  I am truly blessed to have you and your children.

The agenda for next week is as follows:

Spelling: Words with long a sound.  Spelling pre - test on Monday and a final spelling test on Friday for those who do not make 100% on Monday.  For the words missed, students will write them 5 times each. 

English:  We will discuss subjects and predicates in sentences.

Religion: Cain and Abel and how our sins lead to another.  Students have their memory sheets.  The third memory verse is recited on Tuesday and the fourth will be recited on Thursday.

Reading:  We will read The Adventures of Ali Baba.  Discussion will focus on character, plot and setting.  The weekly assessment will take place on Thursday, August 29.

Math:  We will review subtraction, writing numbers through 999, adding money, adding wit regrouping and discussing even and odd numbers.

Social Studies:  We will continue our study on continents and maps.

Science:  Investigating questions and lesson 1 Sum it Up and Brain Check is the focus for the week.

Dear fourth grade parents,

I am so excited for this new year in fourth grade.  We are off to a great start.

Newsletters will be posted under the fourth grade religion are on Sycamore and on the St. John's website.  I will also be sending home a hard copy on Friday's as well.

Cookie dough sales have begun.  Your child received information concerning this fundraiser along with an order form.  We would like to thank you in advance for helping to raise money for our wonderful school.

If you have not completed your paperwork from Meet the Teacher Night, please do so and return to school as soon as possible.

Next week's agenda is as follows:

Religion - Creation.

Spelling - Spelling pre-test on Monday, August 19.  We will study short vowels and the final spelling test will be on Friday (for those who do not make 100% on Monday.

Reading - We will read My Diary from Here to There, discuss inferences and take a weekly assessment on Friday.

Math - We will begin reviewing addition, missing addends, sequence and digits, place value, ordinal numbers and months of the year.

Science - Investigating questions will be the main topic of discussion.

Social Studies - Our focus will be continents and parts of a map.

Dear parents,

 

Happy Friday!  On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, fourth grade will be taking a field trip to the Kibbler farm from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Students will be taking a hay ride, petting animals, riding horses, and learning about life on the farm.  Fourth grade will also attend the Safety Ag Day on Thursday, May 16 from 8:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

 

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

 

Spelling:  We will review words from this year and have a class spelling bee.  

 

Religion:  We will read about Peter and John healing the lame man and Philip and the Ethiopian.

 

English:  Students will be writing a personal narrative and we will be reviewing concepts from this past year.

 

Reading:  Students will have their Charlotte's Web test on Tuesday, May 14.  We reviewed their study guide today in class. We will also discuss prefixes, author's purpose, illustrations, and alliteration and figurative speech.

 

Math: We will learn about geometric solids, constructing prisms and pyramids, and probability.

 

Science: We will finish Unit 8.  Students will be completing their Unit 8 review.  This review will count as a test grade.  Students will be able to take this assignment home.

Dear parents,

Happy Friday!  Students did a great job this week on their Iowa tests.  I'm so proud of each and every student for working so hard.  

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

 

Spelling:  Spelling pre-test on Monday, April 29.  Their spelling words will be over suffixes.

 

English:  We will discuss prepositions.

 

Reading:  We will discuss how to draw conclusions, suffixes, sensory language in poetry, and metaphors.

 

Math:  We will discuss decimal place value, classifying quadrilaterals, and estimating multiplication and division answers.

 

Religion:  We will begin Unit 9, and discuss the Ascension.  Students also received their memory work for next week.  

 

Science:  We will begin Unit 8, Earth and Its Moon.  We will discuss how the Earth and the moon move and reasons for seasons.  Science fair projects are due Monday, April 29 and Science Fair is Thursday, May 2.  

 

Social Studies: We will discuss Missouri's recovery after the Civil War and transportation. Field trip to Jefferson City on Tuesday, April 30.

Dear parents,

 

Happy Friday! Next week in class, we will be reviewing and preparing for the Iowa tests, which will be the week of April 22.  Please make sure your child has plenty of #2 pencils that week.  Ticonderoga tend to work the best for testing.  Please do not send mechanical pencils.  During testing, snacks and drinks will be provided for students.  On Friday, April 26, third and fourth grade will be participating in the Arbor Day events at Central Park.  We will walk to Central Park and participate in the Arbor Day activities at 1:30 p.m.

 

Spelling: Students will not have a spelling test for the next two two weeks. Their next spelling test will be Monday, April 29. 

Religion: we will discuss Jesus in Gethsemane. 

Science: we will begin lesson 2, what is weather.  We will discuss how to measure weather and being ready for weather. Their science fair projects are due Monday, April 29. 

Social studies: students will receive their study guide for their Missouri test.  Their Missouri books are due Wednesday, April 17.  

Reading: we will begin discussing and writing poems. 

Math:  Students received a study guide today in class.  The study guide will be graded as a homework assignment.  They will not have a test, as previously stated, next week.

Dear parents,

Happy Friday!  Spring pictures will be taken on Wednesday, April 10.  If you have not returned the permission form for your child to attend the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, please complete and return to school as soon as possible.  We will be attending on May 16.  

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

Spelling - Spelling pre-test on Monday, April 8.  Their words will be with prefixes.

English - We will discuss negatives. 

Religion - We will continue our unit on Jesus' death and resurrection.  We will discuss Jesus clears the Temple and the Lord's Supper.

Reading - We will discuss fact and opinion, prefixes, and Latin/Greek roots.  We started our new class book, Charlotte's Web this week.  We will continue reading this next week.  Students did an excellent job on their biography book reports.  I enjoyed reading them.  

Math - We will begin multiplying 2-digit numbers, discuss remainders in word problems about equal groups, and mixed numbers and improper fractions. 

Science - We will discuss how water moves all around, three forms of water, and the water cycle.  Science fair projects are due Monday, April 29.  Science fair is Thursday, May 2.

Social Studies - We will discuss Missouri as the Gateway to the West and the Missouri Compromise.  Their Missouri Book is due April 17.  Our field trip to Jefferson City is Tuesday, April 30.

Happy Friday!  Since next week is Lutheran Schools Week, we will not have a spelling test or memory work. We will discuss division with zeros and analyzing and graphing in math.  Students will also have an opportunity to work on their Missouri Book on Wednesday, March 20.  If you are available to help transport students on Tuesday or Wednesday, please let me know.

Happy Friday!  Talent show information was sent home this week.  If your child would like to be in the talent show, please complete the form and return to school by March 4. 

 

Lutheran School Week is March 17-22.  K-8 will be singing in church on March 17 at 10:00 a.m.  A list of events will be sent home in the upcoming weeks. 

 

Basket Bingo will be held on Saturday, March 23. Each class has been asked to donate a basket.  Fourth grade will be doing a "Pampered Pet" basket.  If you would like to help with the fourth grade basket, you can send a $5 donation or an item to be placed in the basket.

Spelling: Pre-test on Monday, February 25.  Their words will be with vowel teams.

 

English: We will discuss adjectives that compare.

Students received their next book report today.  They will be reading a biography.  The book report information was sent home today with your child. The report is due Thursday, March 28. 

 

Math: We will discuss how to collect data with surveys.  Students will get their study guide on Tuesday, February 26, and their test will be Wednesday, February 27.  We will also learn division answers ending in zero and finding information to solve problems.

 

Science:  We will discuss volume and temperature and learn about a metallurgist.

Happy Friday!  It was great to have a full week of school.  Thank you to everyone who attended the Breakfast with Buddies this week. We had a great turnout.

 

St. John's will have their annual basket bingo on March 23, 2019.  This year, each class will have a class basket.  A letter was sent home with your child today with information about our class basket. This is what we will be doing next week in class.

Dear parents,

 

Happy Friday!  On Thursday, February 14, fourth grade will have their Valentine's Day party from 1-2 p.m.  If your child would like to bring a box for their valentine's, they can make a box at home and bring it to school on that day.  I will send home a list of names for both third and fourth grade. 

 

On Sunday, February 17, Immanuel Lutheran Church in West Ely, will host a taco bar and game day.  The event will begin around noon and is a free will offering.  All proceeds go to St. John's School.  

 

Six Flags reading logs are due by February 25th. 

 

Lutheran School's Week is March 17-22.  A letter will be sent home listing the activities for the week.  K-8 will sing at church on Sunday, March 17.

English: We will continue discussing adjectives.

Happy Friday and February!  It's hard to believe we are half way through third quarter.  Third quarter midterms will be sent home on Monday.  On Tuesday, February 5, 4th grade will be attending the musical, The Addam's Family.  We leave promptly at 8:05 am and return to school by 11:45 a.m.  If you are available to drive, please let me know.

Religion: We will finish our unit by reading about David and Goliath.  Students will get their study guides on Friday, February 8.  Their test will be Tuesday, February 12.  Their will be no memory for Tuesday, February 5. Students have their memory verse for Thursday, February 7.  

 

Reading:  We will discuss main idea and details, how to read a flow chart, surrounding words, and closed syllables.  We will also continue reading our class book Restart.

 

Math: We will discuss division with two-digit answers.  They will get their study guide on Thursday, February 7.  Their test will be Monday, February 11.  I have decided to begin their division time test on Tuesday, February 12.  This will give them more time to study at home and for us to review in class.  Their time test will consist of 25 division problems, and they will have 3 minutes to complete each test.  They will need to score a 100% on each quiz before advancing to the next test.  

 

Science:  We will discuss hibernation and migration.  They will receive their unit 3 study guide on Tuesday, February 5.  Their test is scheduled for Wednesday, February 13. 

 

Social Studies: Next week we will begin our unit on Missouri.  Students will be learning about Missouri for the rest of the year.

Happy Friday!  Fourth grade is doing a great job on their states and capitals.  I enjoy seeing them so excited about learning. 

As a reminder, 3-8 grade will be singing at church this Sunday at 10:00 p.m.  Students need to be at the church by 9:45 p.m. If your child is not able to attend, please let Mrs. Adcock know so it will not reflect on their music grade.  

St. John's held their PTL meeting last night, 1/10/19.  They have a lot of exciting things planned for our school.  If were not able to attend, but would like to volunteer with an activity, please let me know, and I can pass the information along.  

 

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

 

Spelling: Pre-test on Monday, January 14. Their words are with /oi/ and /ou/. 

English:  We will discuss possessive pronouns.  

Religion:  We will discuss how God delivers us, God chooses Samson, and what is God's plan. Students received their memory for next week.

Reading:  We will discuss how to draw conclusions while reading and discuss text features.  We will also begin a new class book.  

Math:  We will learn how to use models and pictures to compare fractions, rate word problems, multiplying 3-digit numbers, and estimating arithmetic answers.  

Beginning February 1, fourth grade will begin division time tests.  They will have 3 minutes to complete 25 problems.  We have been practicing in class.  Please keep reviewing multiplication and division with your child at home.  

Science:  We will begin lesson 4, Structural Adaptations.  As a reminder, science fair topics are due February 1. 

Social Studies: We will continue with our states and capital unit and discuss early history of the West.  They will have their states and capitals test, 1-25, on Monday, January 14.

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas break.  On Monday, January 7, we will resume music class.  Please make sure your child brings their recorders to school.  

 

This is what we will be doing next week in class:

 

Spelling: Pretest on Monday, January 7 and post test and dictation on Friday, January 11.  Their spelling words will be with the /u/ sounds.

 

English: We will discuss pronoun/verb agreement.

 

Religion: We will discuss how Gideon leads God's people and how God calls us.  Students received their memory work for next week.

 

Reading:  We will discuss author's purpose, context clues, and comprehension strategies.  Students will have their weekly assessment on Friday, January 11.

 

Math: We will discuss one digit division with remainders, the calendar, rounding to the nearest thousand, and prime and composite numbers.  Their test will be Friday, January 11.

 

Science:  We will finish lesson three by discussing insect life cycles and diversity.  We will also define lesson 4 vocabulary.  St. John's science fair is four months away.  Students will need to turn in their science fair project topic by February 1.  

 

Social Studies:  We will continue our states and capitals unit.  Students were given a list of the 50 states and capitals before Christmas break.  They will have their first quiz over the first five states on Friday, January 4.  Students received information for their state book report.  The book report is due January 31.  We will also begin discussing exploring the West.

Happy Friday!  The next two weeks will be a busy time for our class.  Students are practicing for the upcoming Christmas program, so our schedule will be a little different and lessons and assignments may change. 

 

St. John's is currently collecting donations for our Holiday of Hope family.  If you would like to make a donation t help buy presents for this family, we will be taking them until Friday, December 7.

Religion - We will discuss God's Promise to the Israelites and the Ten Commandments.

Reading - We have completed our book Because of Winn-Dixie. Students will be working on their study guides today in class.  Their test will be Wednesday, November 14.  We will also discuss fact and opinion, using a computer for research, and prefixes. 

Math - We will discuss multiplication facts, reading an inch scale to nearest fourth of an inch, capacity, tenths and hundredths, and relating decimals and fractions. Please continue helping your child study their multiplication facts. They are doing a great job.

Science - We will do a science experiment on Monday and Tuesday.  

Social Studies - We will begin chapter 4, Geography of the Northeast.

Math - Fourth grade will continue their multiplication timed tests on Monday.  They must score an 80% on their test before moving to the next multiplication facts.  Please help your child study.  We will discuss multiplication facts, 9s, 10s, 11s, and 12s, writing numbers through hundred thousands and hundred millions, and naming mixed numbers and money.

Happy Friday!  Parent/teacher conferences will be held next week.  Your conference time was sent home with your child last week.  I look forward to meeting with each of you.  

This is what we will be doing next week in class:

Spelling - Students will take their spelling pre-test on Monday, October 22.  Their spelling words are over suffixes.

English - We will discuss plurals and possessive nouns.

Reading - We will discuss sequencing, homophones, and how to read a chard.  They will not have a weekly assessment next week.  We will also continue reading Because of Winn-Dixie.

Religion -We will discuss baby Moses, the plagues, and Passover.  Students received their memory work for next week today.

Math - Fourth grade will begin their multiplication timed tests on Monday.  They must score an 80% on their test before moving to the next multiplication facts.  Please help your child study.  Students will receive their study guide on Monday, and their test will be Wednesday, October 24.  

Science - We will continue discussing the design process by discussing how to find a problem and planning and building.

Social Studies - We will discuss neighboring countries and how to read a land use and resources map.

Happy Friday!  Parent/teacher conferences have been scheduled.  Students will be bringing home conference times today in their folders.  This is what will be happening in our classroom next week.

Spelling - Pre-test on Monday, October 15.  Their spelling words will be with r-controlled vowels.

English - We will discuss possessive nouns.

Religion - We will discuss Joseph and his brothers, Job, and Moses.  Students received their memory work for next week. 

Reading - We will discuss cause and effect, context clues, and metaphors and hyperbole.  They will take their weekly assessment on Friday, October 19.

Math - We will discuss multiplication facts 0s, 1s, 2s, and 5s and subtracting 3-digit numbers with regrouping.  They will receive their study guide on Thursday, October 18.  They will have their test on Monday, October 22.  We will also begin multiplication time tests the week of October 22.  Please help your child study their multiplication facts. 

Science - Students will have their unit 1 test on Monday, October 15.  We will begin Unit 2, The Engineering Process, on Tuesday.

Social Studies - We will begin Chapter 3.  In this chapter we will discuss United States regions, neighboring countries, understanding regions, and learn how to read a land use and resources map.

Dear parents,

Happy Friday!  It's been a busy week in fourth grade.  We finished unit 1 in science and our government chapter in social studies.  As the weather begins to change, please have your child bring a coat or sweatshirt to school. 

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be the week of October 22.  I will be sending home a letter next week with dates and times to set up times for conferences.

 

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

 

Spelling - Pre-test on Monday, October 8.  Their words will be with three-letter blends.

 

English - We will discuss irregular plural nouns.

 

Reading - We will discuss main idea and details, parts of a book, and idioms.  We will continue to read Because of Winn-Dixie.  Their weekly assessment will be Friday, October 12.

 

Religion - Students received a study guide this week for their test on Monday.  We will begin Unit 2 next week.  There will be no memory for Tuesday, October 9.  They wrote their memory for Thursday, October 11, today.

 

Math - They will get their study guide on Monday and their test is Wednesday, October 10.  We will also discuss fractions and multiplication next week.  Fourth grade will begin multiplication time tests on Monday, October 22.  We have been reviewing in class.  Please help your child review at home.

 

Science - We will be reviewing next week for their test on Monday, October 15.

 

Social Studies - Students were given their study guides this week.  They will have their test on Thursday, October 11.  They received a copy of the Preamble to recite for extra credit.  This is due by Friday, October 12.

Happy Friday!  It's been a great week in fourth grade.  Thank you to everyone who was able to sing at church this past Sunday and attend the open house at school.  The children did a great job.  This is what we will be doing next week in class.

English - Next week we will discuss singular and plural nouns.

Religion - We will discuss the offering of Isaac.  Students will get their study guide on Friday.  They will have their test over unit 1 on Monday, October 8.

Reading - We will continue to read Because of Winn Dixie.  We will also discuss author's purpose, context clues, and comparing and contrasting.  They will have their weekly assessment on Friday, October 5. 

Math - We will learn how to name fractions, adding dollars and cents, lines, segments, rays, and angles, inverse operations, and subtraction word problems.  They will have their test on Wednesday, October 10.

Fourth grade will begin taking multiplication time tests October 22.  I sent home a note with your child today.

Science - We will be doing an experiment next week in class and discuss how to be a meteorologist.  Students will get their Unit 1 study guide on Monday, October 8.  Their Unit 1 test will be Monday, October 15.

Social Studies - We will discuss United States economy and how to make an economic choice.  They will get their study guide on Wednesday, October 3.  Their test will be Thursday, October 11.

Happy Friday!  Just a reminder that 3-8 will be singing at church this Sunday at 10 a.m.  Students should arrive by 9:40.  After church, you are invited to school for St. John's open house.  

This is what we will be doing next week in class:

Spelling - Spelling pre-test on Monday, September 24, 2018.  Their spelling words will be over prefixes.

English - We will discuss common and proper nouns.

Religion - We will read about Sodom and Gomorrah and the offering of Isaac.  We will finish unit 1 next week.  Your child will receive their study guide on Friday.  We will review on Monday and their test is Tuesday, October 2.  

Reading - We will continue reading Because of Winn-Dixie and we will discuss author's purpose.

Math - Students will learn about rounding and units of length and perimeter.  They will receive their study guide on Tuesday, September 25 and their test will be Thursday, September 27. 

Next week I will be sending home a letter in regards to multiplication time tests.  

Science - We will read about communicating data and bar graphs. 

Social Studies - We will discuss U.S. government.  I enjoyed reading your child's country posters.  They did an outstanding job.

Dear parents,

Happy Friday!  Today marks the halfway point of first quarter.  I can't believe how fast these first few weeks have gone.  Your child will receive their mid-quarter grades on Monday. This is what we will be doing next week in class.

Spelling - Students will take their spelling pre-test on Monday, September 17.  Their spelling words will be over the long o.

English - We will discuss run-on sentences and how to correct run-on sentences.

Reading - We will continue reading Because of Winn Dixie.  We will also discuss sequencing, connotation/denotation, and prefixes. They will have their weekly assessment on Friday, September 21. 

Math - Students will take their math test on Monday, September 17.  We reviewed their study guide today in class. Next week we will also discuss expanded form, missing numbers in subtraction, adding columns with regrouping, temperature, and elapsed time. Please help your child start reviewing their multiplication facts.  We will begin multiplication time tests in October.  I will sent more information home in the next couple weeks.  

Religion - We will discuss how Abram finds a way through conflict, Abraham's prayer, questions about prayer, and Sodom and Gomorrah. Students wrote their memory verses for next week in their memory journals today.

Science - We will finish lesson 3 Tuesday, and we will begin a new lesson, Show Me the Evidence, on Wednesday. 

Social StudiesThis week we finished our Passport Unit in social studies.  I hope your child enjoyed learning about the different cultures from around the world.  I'm excited to see their country posters.  

Next week we will discuss The American People in our social studies book.  We will discuss Constitution Day on Monday, September 17.

Happy Friday!  It has been a great week in fourth grade. I'm so proud of how hard your child has worked in class.  Thank you to everyone who turned in cookie dough money for our school fundraiser.  

This is what we will be doing next week in class:

Spelling- Pre-test on Monday, September 10.  Their spelling words will be with long i.  

English- We will learn about complex sentences and how to punctuate complex sentences.  

Reading- We will continue reading Because of Winn Dixie. We will also discuss author point of view, story characters, and how to use a dictionary.  They will have their weekly assessment on Friday, September 14.

Math - We will be adding three-digit numbers, subtracting 2-digit and 3-digit numbers, and subtract 2-digit numbers with regrouping.  

Religion - We will read and discuss Abram and Lot, praising God's name, and God's promise to Abraham.

Science - We will be using microscopes and discussing time and temperature.

Social Studies - We will complete our passport unit by traveling to North and South America.  Student's country posters are due by Friday, September 14, 2018.

Happy Friday!  Just a reminder to have your child's paper work and cookie dough orders turned in on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.  Thank you for selling cookie dough to help support our school.  

 

Beginning Tuesday, we will begin P.E., music, library, and art.  

 

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday weekend.

 

This is what we will be doing next week in class.

 

Religion:  We will discuss the Tower of Babel.  Students received their memory work for Tuesday, September 4 and Thursday, September 6.  

Spelling: Pre-test on Tuesday, September 4.  We will be discussing words with the Long e sound.  

English: We will discuss simple and compound sentences.

Reading: We will discuss Venn diagrams, antonyms, and library skills.  Next week, we will begin our class book, Because of Winn Dixie.  They will also have their weekly assessment on Friday, September 7.

Math: Students voted to receive their study guide today and work on it over the holiday weekend.  Their test will be Wednesday, September 5.  We will review their study guide on Tuesday.  We will also discuss adding word problems with missing addends and missing numbers in subtraction.

Science: We will begin lesson 3, How Do Scientists Use Tools?

Social Studies:  We will continue our Passport unit. We will discuss Australia and Europe.  Their country poster is due Friday, September 14.  If your child has something from a different country, they may bring it and share with the class.

Dear parents,

Happy Friday!  We've successfully completed our first full week of the new school year.  As a reminder, please sign your child's planner each night. This lets me know that your child is showing you their planner and any homework they may have that night.  Please continue to sell cookie dough for our school fundraiser.  Thanks in advance for all your help.

This is what we will be doing next week in class:

Spelling - We will be discussing words with the long a sound.  They will have a pre-test on Monday, August 27 and spelling dictation on Friday, August 31.  Students who miss any words on their pre-test, will write each word they miss five times.  These are due by Thursday each week.  On Friday's, students will only need to write the spelling words they missed, but they must turn in their test from Monday as well.  If they do not turn in their pre-test, they will write all spelling words for the week.  

English - We will discuss subjects and predicates of sentences.

Religion - We will discuss Cain and Abel and our sin leads to another.  They will get their memory of Friday, August 31.  They will be tested on Tuesday, September 4 and Thursday, September 6.

Reading - We will read The Adventures of Ali Baba discuss character, plot, and setting.  They will have their weekly assessment on Friday, August 31.

Math - We will be reviewing subtraction, writing numbers through 999, adding money, adding with regrouping, and discussing even and odd numbers.  

Social Studies - We started our Passport Unit this week and made our first stop in Africa.  Next week we will travel to Antarctica and Australia.  Next week, students will select their country for their country poster project.  More information will come home next week.

Science - We will investigate questions and do lesson 1 Sum It Up and Brain Check.

Dear 4th grade parents,

We are off to a great start in fourth grade.  I'm so excited to have your child in class this year. I'm looking forward to a fun, exciting year. 

Newsletters will be posted under fourth grade religion and will also be posted on St. John's website.  If you are unable to access Sycamore or the website, please let me know and I can send a copy of the newsletter home with your child.

Cookie dough sales began this week.  Your child received information about this fundraiser and an order form.  Thank you in advance for helping raise money for St. John's.

Students received their user names and passwords for Spelling City this week.  This is a great resource to help your child study their spelling words each week.  

If you have not completed and returned the paper work from Meet the Teacher Night, please complete these forms and return to school as soon as possible.

Spelling - 4th grade will have their spelling pre test on Monday, August 20.  We will be studying short vowels.

Math - Next week we will review addition, discuss missing addends, sequences and digits, place value, ordinal numbers, and months of the year.
