If you would want to keep your order a secret for a Christmas gift, please let me know and I can help you with that as well! Thanks!
Book It!
As Dory from Finding Nemo would say, “Just keep reading! Just keep reading!” November Book It! forms are due back to school on December 2nd. Certificates will be sent electronically after the reading log is received back at school.
St. John's Adopts a Family In Need For Christmas
In lieu of classroom gift exchanges, our school will be adopting a family. Mrs. Conoyer and Mrs. Logsdon will be shopping with the wish list for that family. If you would like to contribute to the cause, please send to school next week in an envelope marked for "Adopt A Family".
Parents and Teachers Working Together
At the end of first grade/second grade P.E. classes this week, Mr. Hess was having a discussion with all students about "keeping hands to yourself". Many, many times a day, I also have to remind students to "keep hands to themselves". Please talk to your student about personal space and the importance of not touching others, which is especially critical during the fast approaching cold and flu season.

Parents and Teachers Working Together
In recent years, I have been seeing an overall attitude change when it comes to taking care of school supplies. Some kids do not see the importance of keeping their things nice since we can just go to the store and magically get a new one of whatever we need. Please talk to your child about the cost of school supplies and how we should try to keep our things as nice as possible. Maybe this will help decrease the number of broken crayons and eraserless pencils that I have to pick up off the floor every day. Thanks for your help!

This year, we are trying to implement the Book It program by using the online version. Earlier this week, I sent invitation emails so that you could sign your child up for the program. Please let me know if you did not receive any emails from Book It! this week...thanks!

Now that we have suddenly skipped fall and went straight into winter-like temperatures, the students are having a hard time adjusting to wearing coats, hats, and gloves. Please encourage your child to bring cold weather gear to school each day and to WEAR IT during cold outside recesses. If they get warm, they can unzip their coats, but they should keep their coats on to keep them from getting chilly...instead of being the "cool" kid who does not wear a coat in frigid temps. Thanks for your support!

In today's Communication Folder, there is a mid term report to let you know your child's progress so far during the First Quarter. This report showed you "grades" for the major subject areas. Although we have an ungraded report card at the end of the quarter, this will let you know if your child needs to focus more on a subject as we finish the First Quarter. Backpack Pages
Thank you so much for helping your child with their Superkids Backpack Pages each week and returning them to school on Friday! (We did not have any last week...look for them again this upcoming week.)The fluency page (generally the front page) is designed to practice with your child once each day of the week. So actually it is ideal if you keep the packet until Friday so that you can do this practice. Feel free to unstaple the packet and work with it as needed. The word cards that they make for Spelling words (generally the second page) can be cut apart, and then your child can keep the cards they make. Just return the top portion of this page. Please staple all pages back together, initial as completed, and return on Friday morning.

Pet Pictures
We still have plenty of room on our Pet Picture Bulletin Board! Please send in pictures of your family pets so we can fill in the empty spaces. Kids love to share their pet stories. Thanks!
Sleep and Breakfast Are Important We are still adjusting to being back in school again, and many of the kids are used to getting up late, eating a late breakfast, then having a normal lunch time. Now that breakfast is happening early, they are “STARVING” by the time lunch finally rolls around at 11:50! Please encourage your student to go to bed at a reasonable time, and to eat a good breakfast before coming to school each morning. Unfortunately, there are no snacks (or naps!) in first grade! Thanks!
Saxon Math Homework Thank you to everyone for your attention regarding the math homework! This is a very important part of the Math program and will help them practice the skills they will need to move forward. It works best when you give your student a few minutes to complete the work on their own, then sit down with them and look over their paper (both sides) to make sure that they understand and have the correct answers. This homework is not an attempt to “trick” your child at all. If they miss something, please do fix it with them and talk about the answer so that the next time they encounter it on their own – on a test for example – they may be more successful. Please have them use pencil and crayon only (no markers or pens) to complete their work. If you have any questions on how to manage the math homework with your child, please let me know.
Reward Tickets in the Treasure Box
In lieu of candy or toy trinket prizes in the Treasure Box this year, I am letting the students choose from a variety of reward coupons. To earn these coupons, students must get five hole punches on their reward cards. Punches can be earned by bringing in church bulletins. They can also earn one punch for every green card day during the week. Reward options include opportunities to wear sun glasses, flip flops, or slippers in the classroom. Students may also chose to take home a stuffed animal or to bring a pillow to class. Please check-in with your student to see how they are doing with their reward tickets.
Chit Chat Notebooks
Thank you for helping me with this fun writing project! We will be sending this notebook home a couple of times a week - please sign and return on the next school day.

We will not yet be having a Spelling test next week, but do look for a Backpack Page packet to be coming home in the folder on Monday. You can help your child complete and return by Thursday. Also, please look for an orange note in today's folder to fill out and return. This questionnaire helps me learn more about your student and his or her interests.

Welcome to Sycamore! I am including a printed copy of this week’s Class News in the Friday Communication Folder. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing Sycamore using the username and password you used last school year. I will be working with office to get new usernames and beginning passwords for new families. (Actually I am asking the office to resend usernames and passwords for all families.) Also, let me know if you have not received (or need more copies of) the pamphlet that was given out at Meet the Teacher Night. Basic instructions for accessing Sycamore are listed in this pamphlet. Thank you for helping St. John’s save on paper and printing costs again this school year! Please be sure to check Sycamore every Friday for a new Class News entry.
Our Safe Place in Time of Emergency An FYI for parents: in case of an emergency in our building or neighborhood, St. John’s has an agreement with Eugene Field Elementary at 1405 Pearl Street. This building is our first choice for a safe place to go with our students. Our second option will be St. John’s Lutheran Church at 1201 Lyon Street.
Food Allergies
This year, we are asking that all students with a food allergy provide a doctor's note to fully explain this condition. This child will stay on our food allergy list until a doctor's note is received to clarify the child is cleared from this food allergy. Please send this information to school with your child as soon as possible. Thanks!
Religion As part of our first grade Religion curriculum, I will be assigning Bible verses for the children to memorize and repeat back to me. Welcome Letter |
August 2019
Dear Parents and First Graders:
Hello! I would like to welcome my students back to school!
First – a little background : Ten years ago, I returned to St. John’s as the first and second grade teacher. I previously had taught second grade here for the 1998-1999 school year, and then first grade after that for three more years. Previous to that, I taught for two years at Holy Rosary School in Monroe City at the first grade level. And before all of that, I graduated from Culver-Stockton College in May 1996 with a degree in Elementary Education. After taking some time out in the business world (working for Niemann Foods in Quincy as an Equipment Buyer), I decided that I was missing the imagination and creativity that teaching brought to my days. So I returned to the field of education. I live with my husband, Doug, and thirteen year old daughter, Maddie in Payson, Illinois. Maddie is an eighth grader in Mrs. Smith's classroom this year!
I would like the parents to know that they are always welcome to visit our room, which is exclusively a first grade room. If you have concerns, questions, etc…please don’t hesitate to call me at school (221-0215), on my cell (217-430-9257), or e-mail me at kbradshaw@stjohnshannibal.org. We are working as a team to help our kids get the best education possible!
A few things to keep in mind:
1. Please check your child’s bookbag every evening for a School Note Folder. This folder will be sent home every evening with important all-school notes and information that often needs to be signed and returned. Also you will find information about your child’s daily behavior inside this folder. From time to time, the folder may contain completed work, work to be singed and returned, or work that needs to be completed and returned to school on the following school day. Please go through the completed papers with your child. Help explain to them any mistakes that were made. Be sure to praise them for their really good work! Folders need to be returned to school on the following school day.
2. The Weekly Friday Parent Letter may be viewed online using the Sycamore program under Class/News. If you are unable to access Sycamore and would like to request a paper copy of the Friday Parent Letter, please let me know. The office plans to send everyone reminders about their user names and passwords hopefully sometime next week.
3. Due to the increase of students with various food allergies, I have decided to eliminate edible birthday treats in our classroom. Non-edible treats such as pencils, stickers, or erasers are fine to bring to share with friends. Kids with summer birthdays can celebrate their “half-birthday” (six months from their real birthday).
4. Students will have gym class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure that they are wearing comfortable clothing, and they must be wearing tennis shoes to participate. Kids may bring a pair of tennis shoes to school to always have on hand for gym class. Also, we will be having Art on Friday afternoons, so kids might want to come in clothes that are not their “Sunday Best” in case of an accident!
5. Grades K-2 are starting our second school year of using the Superkids Reading series! Currently, we are planning on sending Backpack Pages for the week in the Monday Communication Folder. Please help your child complete these pages and return to school by Friday morning. Other regular homework in first grade will be Memory Work, Spelling Words, and Reading Memory Words (which can all be found on the Friday Parent Letters), and Math (see below). Students may have additional homework depending on what is not completed at school.
6. Our Math series is Saxon Math. This is a very intense way of teaching Math that I feel is great because of its constant review of skills learned. However, please be looking for Math homework sheets to be coming home in the Communication Folder almost every evening! This is a way for your student to show you what they have learned that day. Although frequent, the pages won’t be very long or time consuming. Please make sure that your student completes these and returns them to school on the following school day.
7. Please refer to the pamphlet given to you at the “Meet the Teacher” event for an easy to reference schedule for the week, contact information, and behavior management details.
When dreaming of the future for my students, I hope that they will grow into adults who possess the following ten character traits: self discipline, self respect, respect for others, integrity, perseverance, patience, generosity, commitment, determination, and diligence. I hope that you will work together with me to help promote these qualities in the hearts and minds of our students. This will provide them with the tools they can use to serve as Christian witnesses and productive members of their future communities.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you this year!
Love and Blessings,
Mrs. Bradshaw
