Letter From the Principal
Dear Families,
I had a wonderful time visiting my in-laws and children in Florida over Thanksgiving.  I hope each of you had a great time with your friends and family too.
As Catholics, we celebrate the beginning of the Liturgical Year with the First Sunday in Advent, which was November 29th.  It  seems fitting that Advent is the beginning of the liturgical calendar, for it is a season of spiritual preparation marked by excitement and longing for the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. During these next three weeks it is our goal to focus on the Birth of Christ with each student experiencing the joy of the Advent Season.
I have a couple of reminders as we just have three short weeks until Christmas break. All school mass is Tuesday, December 8th 1:00 p.m. and also on December 15th at 8:15 a.m.  Please join us for these all school masses. It is wonderful when our entire community worships together. Please add these dates to your calendar.

Many Blessings,

Stacy Tackett

Faith Matters- November
By Maureen Rogg, Coordinator of Religious Education

The month of November gives us several opportunities to reflect on the blessings God has given us.  I would like to discuss three opportunities we have had during the month of November to express our gratitude.  As a country, we recently celebrated Veterans Day on November 11 in a number of ways.  Many cities celebrated with parades.  Restaurants acknowledged our veterans with complimentary meals.  Scouts and others placed flags on gravesites.  Students throughout the nation made cards which were delivered to veterans’ hospitals.  We, at St. Michael, remembered the sacrifices of our veterans and their families with a program hosted by our second grade students.  It was a wonderful expression of the gratitude we have to our veterans, as well as those who are currently serving in the military.

We had an opportunity to further express our gratitude on Thanksgiving Day. Yes, it wonderful to share a delicious meal with family and friends.  Thanksgiving would not be the same without the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberries and pumpkin pie … and football games!   I’m sure your families made a place for gratitude at the table.  As teachers and catechists, we often ask our students to reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon them.  Although the Thanksgiving holiday may be over, it is never too late to reflect on the gifts we have received from God and ways in which we may share them with others.  Perhaps your family would like to name one thing to be thankful each day through the end of the year.

A third opportunity for the expression of gratitude this month is the beginning of the liturgical season of Advent which began November 29.  As our Church enters this most holy season, I would encourage you to spend some time in preparation for the coming of Christ.  God has provided many gifts to us as his children; we have been blessed with the gift of his son, Jesus, and the gift of faith.  As we enter the season of Advent, we are reminded there are many opportunities available to grow closer to Jesus.

♦ New Requirements for Serving Alcohol at St. Michael Events

The Archdiocese of Louisville now requires volunteers who serve alcohol at any parish event (Taste of St. Michael Auction, Fish Fry, Summer Picnic, Trivia Night, etc.) to view a 55-minute video on best practices and legalities. Once you view the video, you will be added to the list of "approved" volunteers who can serve alcohol at parish events. There is a training session scheduled for this Tuesday, December 1, at 7 pm in the "doughnut room" below the church. Please plan to attend if you think you may volunteer to serve alcohol at one of our many parish events.

♦ The 2016 Kentucky General Assembly is almost upon us. One important issue that will be

brought up in Frankfort is Scholarship Tax Credit Programs. Parental choice is essential for quality education and scholarship tax credits will enable more parents to make that choice, no matter their economic standing.

Over the next few months, you will hear about this issue from EdChoice KY. The coalition is

educating the Commonwealth on Scholarship Tax Credit programs which allow individuals, businesses and banks to contribute money to a 501(c)(3) scholarship granting organization and in return, donors will receive a tax credit to offset their state tax liability. The scholarships ensure that all students have the opportunity to obtain the education they deserve at a school that best suits their educational needs.
