Letter From the Principal

Dear Parents,

We are excited to celebrate Homecoming Week.  I hope you will be able to join us for many of the great events that have been planned.  Special thanks to Rob Owen for his organization of this week’s events.

This summer our emergency plan was revised with counsel from the Kentucky Center for School Safety.  I feel confident that if, God forbid, an emergency were to occur, we would be prepared.  Safety is our top priority.  This week we are practicing all of our emergency drills.  We had a lockdown drill today.  I was so impressed by the students and staff.  We will have a tornado drill, fire drill, and earthquake drill later this week.  Additionally, you should have received a test message of our emergency notification system last week.  Please make sure your contact information is up to date in Sycamore.

Teachers are also planning lessons to incorporate the Papal Visit next week.  I encourage you to start a conversation with your child about this momentous event.  Please see the article below with more information.
Our regular school masses begin tomorrow.  Parents are welcome to have their children sit with them.  We hope many of you will be able to join us.

Have a wonderful week!
Mrs. Stacy Tackett

St. Michael Prepares for Papal Visit
From September 22 - 27, 2015, the United States is hosting an exciting event, the VIII World Meeting of Families, an international gathering of Catholic families for days of prayer, catechesis, and celebration of the gift of family. Pope Francis has been invited to attend this gathering. This World Meeting of Families will be held in Philadelphia, and you are invited to attend!
Since it is a special occasion of grace for the whole Church and for our country in a particular way, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Pontifical Council for the Family have made available a preparatory catechesis entitled Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive which draws its title from the theme for the gathering. This catechesis brings together in ten simple lessons the Catholic Church’s teachings on marriage and family.
This catechesis has been adapted to lessons for elementary and high school students and we will be using these lessons with your child. We will keep you updated on the content being covered in class so that you can continue these important conversations at home with your children.
As you may also have heard from news reports, two meetings will discuss the Church’s pastoral care of the family: first, in an extraordinary Synod of Bishops (or gathering of bishops from around the world with the Holy Father) which will be held in Rome in October 2014; and second, in the ordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops which will be held in Rome in October 2015. Truly, it is a time when the Church wants to support families and to help families in their indispensable mission!      Let us join together in prayer that God would be help, strength, healing, and hope to families in our country, and around the world, through the World Meeting of Families.
The Archdiocese of Louisville has created a website in support of the World Meeting of Families and
Papal Visit. The purpose of this website is to provide as many resources and experiences (through streaming video) as possible so that families in the Archdiocese of Louisville can share in the fruits of these events through prayer, education, and action in the weeks leading up to, during the week of the World Meeting and Papal Visit, and as the Synod on the Family takes place. Visit the site at often as new material will be added as it becomes available.

Teachers will also be incorporating the World Meeting of Families curriculum for elementary and middle school students.  God bless you and your family.
